Career Coaching
This programme provides a framework to support individuals through their career development. It can be used by people who wish to develop themselves within their existing employment or by those who are seeking to explore new possibilities and/or seek a new direction. It has been developed using research into best practice in career evaluation alongside coaching methodology.
Research consistently reveals that those who are motivated and satisfied at work are in careers which reflect their true nature; their passions; their values and which draw upon their natural strengths. All coaching begins with the discovery of these, hence there is a natural fit between coaching and career evaluation.
The programme uses a combination of assessment tools; exercises; brainstorming; face to face and/or telephone coaching and email correspondence. Preferred learning and communication styles will be taken into account and the programme approached to best suit the recipient.
The programme structure
Phase One- Explore
This is designed to explore who you are in all spheres of life, not just at work. This is a vital foundation because understanding your passions and values enables us to evaluate your career options throughout the programme with these powerful motivators in mind.
The areas covered in Explore include:
- Your Values
- Your Achievements
- Your Positive Attributes
- Your Strengths
- Your Passion
- Your Interests
- What makes You Happy and Fulfilled
Once we have this information about you and your life we then look at your work. We work together to identify:
- Your Favourite Job Skills
- Your Motivators
- Your Professional Strengths
- Your Work Achievements to date
- Your Preferred Work Environment
- Your Preferred Type of Organisation
- Your Ideal Working Day
- What would Make You Motivated and Satisfied at Work
We use two key formats, which are ongoing and active, to record discoveries and ideas as they occur during the process. These are the Work Star and the Life Star. The graphical nature of these helps you to visualise your ideas as they develop.
By the end of Explore you will be very clear about what you must have in both life and at work to be at your best self. Representing these in the Star formats provides us with a yardstick to test career and/or job prospects against as we move through the programme.
Concurrently, we open an Ideas bank during our first week of Explore. Here, we log any ideas that you may have had prior to commencing coaching, and add new ideas as we go along.
Phase Two- Dream
This is a very creative phase of the programme where together we begin to generate a number of different career possibilities. Clients enjoy this phase as it is very energetic and inspiring as we consider all possibilities! We work toward creating a shortlist of 1-3 strong, grounded possibilities to take through to the final stage
Phase Three-Discover
Here we use a creative process again to turn your top possibility into a practical action plan and strategise to make it happen. You will reach the end of the programme with an increased sense of who you are; what you want and with a considered plan to get you there!
At this stage, some people chose to continue coaching to support them through their transition or through other areas that may have become apparent through the process. Other clients move straight into action and no longer need coaching!
Other professionals
We have a strong network of other professionals with whom we work to make sure that you have access to all the support that you may want and need. These include; personal trainers; stylists; nutritionists; therapists and training organisations.
When to use the programme
This programme may be used by anyone that works and who wants to be motivated and fulfilled by their work.
Examples of individuals that benefit from the career coaching programme:
- People who feel that they are in the right industry but maybe not the right role or organisation. E.g. people whose companies have undergone a takeover or restructure and the culture of the company has changed, they want to review their roles or they see their prospects for development within their existing company are no longer appropriate for them.
- People who have been made redundant. If people have been with their employer for a significant period they may have not engaged with the job market for some time; may feel somewhat 'institutionalised' and would like to review their options and what jobs exist. We are able to use the programme with companies who incorporate it into their redundancy packages, therefore giving people who are leaving their employ a valuable tool to help them in their transition and next steps.
- Companies who have internal appraisal systems and want to find effective strategies for harnessing the information gleaned from these. career coaching can help them to develop and retain their people internally. We can work with your processes to help employees to find the right training and/or opportunities available to develop them professionally.
- People who have been out of work for a period and want to return to work but are not sure where they want to work. For example, mothers who have had time out of work to raise children. We have also used personal stylists at this time to help people prepare for interviews and work environments with even greater confidence.
- People who believe that they want change, they may know what they would like to do but are not sure how to go about it. For example, a person may feel that they want to be in a totally different industry and need to explore how to get there, what training may be required and how to transition between jobs.
- People who want to discover different modes of and ways to structure working. There are many different ways to explore careers and different ways to work; sabbatical; full or part time; self employed; job share; via further study; volunteering; redunadancy and many more.
These are just a few of the many possible scenarios that the programme has been designed to address.
